A calm start to the new term: a checklist for school leaders
The first two weeks set the tone for the whole term. This checklist helps you start organised and keep parents on board.
Before learners arrive
A little preparation saves a lot of phone calls later.
Confirm class lists and teacher allocations. Ask parents to check emergency contacts, allergies and medical information. Review who is authorised to collect each learner. Prepare the term calendar: openings, half term, meetings and events.
In the first week
Parents remember how the term started.
Send a welcome message with key dates and contacts. Share fee plans and instalment dates clearly. Explain how and when parents will receive updates. Hold a short briefing with staff on routines and safety.
Keep data tidy
The start of term is a good moment to remove information you no longer need and to make sure records are accurate — both good practice under the ODPC’s guidance for schools.
